Grass cutting season

We reduce a lot of cost and labour by not fertilising, nor cutting hay. Instead, we have very low stocking rates and slash the grass to reduce biomass and fire hazard. With the aid of an aerator this breaks down quickly and puts nutrients back into the soil. It'll never be as high in Phosphorous as a fertilised paddock but it means there's no run off into the river and the soil is more receptive for native grasses.

This year we reduced the slashed area by a few acres to leave a place for the quail. Not a very good photo but look closely and you'll see her.
